Security in critical infrastructures... How to protect them and what would be the effect of not doing it in the right way?
Today's states face multiple security challenges on an increasingly challenging and complex game board. Globalisation has brought with it new opportunities, but also new risks that threaten developed societies where all critical infrastructures are perfectly interrelated.
These infrastructures pose major security challenges, as they support and enable the proper functioning of society as we know it. This category includes sectors as diverse as transport, health, banking, education, government, military bases, industry, nuclear energy, data centres, etc. However, they all have one thing in common: a failure or sabotage in the security system could have serious consequences, putting goods, people and assets at risk.
In the worst case scenario, but almost as an inevitable consequence, this could trigger a cascade effect within the other sectors considered as critical, essential or strategic, leading to a detriment of vital services and serious security disruptions or dysfunctions.
This would destabilise society, and could have a very negative impact on the economy, health and public safety, not to mention the social consequences of widespread panic and public disorder. Protecting critical infrastructures is not a trivial matter, it requires very high security standards and an unwavering commitment to excellence; critical infrastructures are indispensable and do not allow for alternative solutions.
How can critical infrastructures be protected?
